“Kansas Exploits and the 1857 Utah Adventure of H.S. Adams” will be the program at this month’s Tonganoxie Community Historical Society meeting, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at the historic site, 201 W. Washington St., Tonganoxie.
Perry Lee Walters will be giving the presentation about H.S. Adams, who came in 1857 to Leavenworth, signing on with the military as a civilian teamster, driving a supply wagon pulled by six mules. Adams headed to Utah to put down the Mormon Uprising. Walters’ program will highlight the difficulties faced during the winter at Fort Bridger, historical events occurring during the trip, some of the people involved in the uprising, including the U.S. Army, and members of the Nauvoo Legion commissioned by Brigham Young.
