The Tonganoxie junior high girls basketball teams began play last week. The girls are divided into A and B team in both seventh and eighth grade.

Julie Frank and Phil Jeannin are coaching 32 seventh-grade girls.
Bill Shaw and John Korb are coaching 28 eighth-grade girls.

Eighth-grade girls A team

The A team opened the season with a 21-20 win against Oskaloosa.
The defense created numerous turnovers using a half-court trap.

The Warriors trailed by two points late in the game. But Kelly Breuer hit a basket to end Tonganoxie's scoring drought, and Lauren Donnelly made a free throw the final margin of the game.

"It's always good to win your first game," Korb said. "We need to do a better job offensively and hitting free throws. I hope we can develop a stronger bench so the girls will be confident coming into the game."
Donnelly and Michelle McWilliams led the defense. Breuer and Katie Jeannin were the top rebounders.

Mollie McCaffrey and Breuer each scored six points. Donnelly had three points, and McWilliams, Jeannin and Jenny Thompson each scored two points.

"The girls worked hard," Korb said. "I was very pleased with their hustle and determination."
