Community Thanksgiving service

A Community Thanksgiving worship service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 24, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

YongBo Lee, minister of the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church, will give the sermon.

The public is invited to attend.

Civil War quilts topic of THS program

The Tonganoxie Community Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Tonganoxie Public Library. The KITES exhibit, “Women and Their Civil War Quilts,” and local quilts will be on display.

Terry Thompson, quilt maker and designer, will present the program. Her honorarium is provided by Mutual Savings. Visitors are welcome.

The historical society has a new crop of pecans to sell.

Tin Man building has new owner

Kay Emery, owner of Legal Printing, a Tonganoxie printing business, has purchased the building which previously housed the Tin Man coffee shop at 628 E. Fourth St.

Emery said she has tentative plans to rent the space out for offices. The building’s upstairs is rented as an apartment, she said.

Before it became a coffee shop known as The Tin Man, Emery said, it housed law offices, first for Joe Cox and later for Mike Gibbens.

She purchased the building from Romanda Wilson of Lawrence.

Local student pledges Kappa Delta

Kathleen Nowak, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Nowak, Tonganoxie, has been named a member of the Kansas State University chapter of Kappa Delta sorority for the 1999-2000 school year. The sorority recently recolonized, holding an open rush in late September.

Salvation Army to host Thanksgiving dinner

The Salvation Army will host a community-wide Thanksgiving dinner, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 25, at the Riverfront Community Center, 123 S. Esplanade, Leavenworth. Sponsors will be the Salvation Army and Santa Fe Catering.

Food donations and workers are needed.

No reservations are required and everyone is welcome. For transportation, call Ace Taxi at 682-1229 or Veterans’ Taxi, 682-7200.

Delivery will be made to shut-ins. For more information, call 682-6523.

Library holiday hours

The Tonganoxie Public Library will be closed Wednesday Nov. 24, in the afternoon and all day Thursday, Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 26, for Thanksgiving.

Clinger receives forensics award

The Nebraksa Wesleyan University forensics team placed fifth at the Jackrabbit Joust Tournament, at South Dakota State University I Brookings.

Jeff Clinger, Tonganoxie advanced to the smifinals in prose.

First State Bank & Trust celebrates 65th anniversary this week

First State Bank & Trust is celebrating its 65th anniversary this week, Nov. 15-20.

There will be free gifts, antique cars, 30s costumes, kids’ coloring event, classic movies, monster trucks, prize drawings, 1930s era music, anniversary cake and refreshments.

The bank will have special cook-outs at either of the locations to thank friends and customers from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 19.
