George F. Bernhardt 1914-1999

George F. Bernhardt, 85, Leavenworth, Kan., died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the home. Mr. Bernhardt was born Jan. 5, 1914, the third child of four born to Frederick and Josie Bernhardt.

Following his graduation from Tonganoxie High School in 1931, he attended Emporia State Teacher's College in Emporia, Kan. He taught school for two years in Reno, Kan. In 1935, he went to work for the Tonganoxie State Bank.

The following year he went to work at the Leavenworth Savings and Trust Company. Mr. Bernhardt then embarked on his life-long career in real estate, insurance and banking which culminated in the opening of The Bernhardt Agency in the mid 1940s.

He served as a radio operator in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. He married Margaret Hampel of Leavenworth on June 29, 1939, a marriage of 48 years which ended with her death in 1987. They were proud parents of two children, Gary and Janice.

Mr. Bernhardt was married on Dec. 29, 1989, to Dorothy Shalkoski.

Mr. Bernhardt served the Leavenworth Community faithfully for many years. He served as first chairman of the Leavenworth County Planning Commission, the first chairman of the Leavenworth County Regional Planning Commission, Chairman of the Federal Building/Post Office Committee, and was a member and Past President of the Present Leavenworth Country Club, which was built in 1960.

Mr. Bernhardt served on the Board of Trustees for Cushing Memorial Hospital for more than 30 years, including time spent as chairman. He also spent 36 years as a member of the Board of Directors at the Leavenworth National Bank, which also included time spent as chairman of the board. He served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Hotel Cody Building committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Josie Bernhardt; his brother Glen; sister Gladys; wife Margaret, and niece Shirley Givens.

He leaves his wife, Dorothy of the home; his daughter, Janice Bernhardt of Tonganoxie; his son, Dr. Gary Bernhardt, and his wife Nancy of Overland Park, Kan.; and step -daughter Sue Ann Shalkoski of Eagan, Minn.
He also leaves his step-son Vic Shalkoski of Overland Park, Kan.; three grandchildren, Kelli, Scott and Gabe; his sister, Mary Katherine Peterson of Seattle, Wash., several nieces and nephews, and countless friends and neighbors. We love and miss you George, take care.

Funeral services were held Oct. 15 at the First Presbyterian Church, Leavenworth, Kan. The Rev. Tim Doty officiated. Burial followed in the Mt. Muncie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Cushing Memorial Hospital or Kansas City Hospice. Davis Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
