Democrat files for township post

By Lisa Stevens John - | Apr 5, 2000

Richard Riedel has filed to run for trustee of Stranger Township.

Stranger Township is east of Tonganoxie and reaches north to County Road 8 and south to Kansas Highway 32. Albert Joe Doege presently holds the position.

According to county clerk Linda Scheer, the deadline for filing is noon June 12, and the primary election will be held Aug. 1. The general election will be held Nov. 7.

Riedel, 64, grew up in Beloit and has lived near Tonganoxie for 10 years. Prior to moving here, he and his wife, Nancy Lou, lived in Kansas City, Kan. Before he retired, Riedel worked most recently as a security officer and prior to that as a truck driver.

He decided to run for trustee, in part, because of the growth in the area. “Stranger is one of the faster-growing townships in Leavenworth County,” Riedel said. “I believe that we need a little more progressive leadership in the township than what we have now.”

Riedel, a Democrat, has served as a Democratic precinct committeeman and is a member of the Tonganoxie Civic Club. In addition, he has taught hunter education courses for 27 years.

In other area township elections, Scheer said that Melissa Saathoff, a Republican, has filed for the position of Reno Township treasurer. Marie Ice currently holds the seat.
