Baseball losing skid hits four

By Matt Friedrichs - | Apr 19, 2000

Since winning two games against Perry-Lecompton last Tuesday, the Tonganoxie baseball team has lost four straight games at Lansing and Silver Lake.

Chris Herron, Tonganoxie baseball coach had little to say after the losses.

“We have to field the ball, not just better, but much better,” Herron said Tuesday morning.

Against Perry-Lecompton, the Chieftains jumped to early leads in 14-4 and 8-1 wins.

The Chieftains scored four runs in the first, one in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth and four in the sixth.

Ryan Lowe got the win, pitching five innings, allowing six hits and striking out six.

Eric Whitner was 3-3 with with a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in. John Barnes hit a three-run home run in the sixth. Kyle Rodell stole second in the first and sixth innings.

The team looked like it might have snapped out of a season-opening hitting slump, going 18-35 at the plate. But in the second game, the Chieftains didn’t hit nearly as well.

Whitner started and got the win, allowing six hits and a run in five innings. Tonganoxie was 7-23 at the plate.

The Chieftains scored twice in the first, three times in the second, once in the fourth and once in the fifth.

The rest of the week wasn’t so pretty.

Thursday at Lansing, the Chieftains scored one run in the first game and three in the second.

John Barnes reached on a single in the second inning of the first game and scored. He had two of the team’s four hits. Lansing won 5-1.

Lansing also won the second game. The 8-3 win included a five-run third inning. Four walks, an error, a triple and a double didn’t help Tonganoxie.

The Chieftains extended their losing streak Monday with 10-5 and 18-6 losses at Silver Lake.

Whitner hit a solo home run in the first inning of the first game. Jared Walters knocked one over the fence in the fourth inning of the second game.

Tonganoxie was a combined 10-48 against Silver Lake and 13-53 against Lansing for a .227 average.
