Churches set Easter services, egg hunts

Special services, breakfasts and Easter egg hunts. Area churches are going out of their way to celebrate the Easter weekend.

“It’s going to be a good week, but a busy one,” said Tom Saunders, pastor of the Heartland Community Church of the Nazarene.

Like many of the other area churches, Heartland will start the week with a Thursday night Maundy Thursday service at the church, located south of Tonganoxie on U.S. Highway 24-40.

This includes a Passover meal, Saunders said.

“We will have potluck as part of the meal,” Saunders said, “But for Seder, we’ll have lamb, roasted eggs, garlic and horseradish things like that.”

A Good Friday service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at the church, and on Easter Sunday, a sunrise service outside the church will start the day. This will be followed by a free breakfast, and at 10:30, the regular service will follow.

A communitywide Easter sunrise service is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. Easter Sunday at the Reno Church, at the Tonganoxie Historical Society site.

The Rev. Ben Saathaff, of the Christian Church, will lead this service. The Tonganoxie Ministerial Alliance sponsors this service.

At the Pentecostal Church, 119 E. Sixth St., Alonzo Davis, pastor, will hold the Easter service at 11 a.m., which is the usual Sunday service time.

And at the Grace Bible Fellowship Church, 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday services will be held at the Reno Church, Tonganoxie Historical Society site.

Jack Ulmer, pastor of the Congregational Church, 303 East Fourth St., said the church will host a Maundy Thursday communion service at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The church invites the community to attend a free breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Easter Sunday. The Sunday church service begins at 10:30 a.m.

At the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 703 River, a Holy Thursday mass will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The Good Friday celebration of the Lord’s passion will begin at 7 p.m. Friday.

A Holy Saturday blessing of the food for Easter will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and a Holy Saturday mass will begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Rev. Mark Goldasich will lead these services, as well as the Easter Sunday masses, scheduled for 8 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

The United Methodist Church, 328 E. Fourth St., will hold a Maundy Thursday service, starting at 7:30 p.m., Thursday.

YongBo Lee, minister, and the church invite the community to an Easter breakfast, set for 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Donations will be accepted.

The Easter service, which features a cantata performed by the church choir and directed by Nancy Gibbens, will be a part of the worship service, which begins at 10:50 a.m.

Easter services at the Christian Church begin with a Maundy Thursday service, Thursday evening.

“This will show how the Jewish Passover relates to the communion taking in our church,” said Harold Pittman, associate minister.

The church invites the community to a free Easter breakfast, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Easter worship services will be held at 8 a.m., 9:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

The Tonganoxie Friends Church will hold the Easter service at the regular church worship time, 11 a.m.
