Raffle to benefit library
The Friends of the Library will be raffling a playhouse to help raise funds to purchase books for the Tonganoxie Library.
Chances to win the playhouse, which will be in the parade tonight, will cost $1 for one chance or six chances for $5. Material for the playhouse was donated by Himpel Lumber. Mike Weston donated the labor, and Color Wheel provided the paint.
"We certainly appreciate everything that has been donated," said Connie Putthoff, Friends of Library member.
A couple of years ago, Putthoff bought chances to win a playhouse in Lawrence. Since the Friends needed to raise funds, Putthoff suggested the local group raffle a playhouse.
The Friends will sell chances from now until the drawing, which will be during Tonganoxie High School Homecoming festivities Oct. 6. They have started selling chances at the parking lot of B & J Apple Market.
"We hope to make quite a bit of money," Putthoff said.
She hopes that selling chances for two months will bring in enough money to purchase many books that the library needs. She hopes the raffle will raise at least $1,000.
The Friends' checking account was depleted when it helped purchase the computer system for the library a couple of years ago, Putthoff said.
Putthoff said the 4-by-6-foot playhouse is tall enough for a man to get into it.
"It would be great for a child to stand in and wait for the bus," Putthoff said.
