Development plan decision a solid one

The Tonganoxie City Councils decision Monday night to spend $10,000 to update the citys comprehensive development plan was a sound one.

If Tonganoxies growth is to be smart growth, the city must carefully plan for that growth. Both city board members and the citys paid staff must have a document to guide them when talking with developers of property.

If the firms references check out, Strauss and Associates, will work closely during the next few months with an eight-member volunteer group to update the plan. The city decided to use the help of outside professionals to help protect it from legal entanglements in the future. And that will be a wise investment.

As city planner Linda Zacher said: A plan for a city is much more extensive than a plan for a business.

By law, the city must complete its update by the end of the year. The Strauss firm, which is based in Lawrence, has said its work will be complete by the first of December.

That should allow plenty of time for comment from Tonganoxie residents on changes to the comprehensive development plan. And residents should take the opportunity to review and comment on the plan, which will guide development in our city.
