County to test emergency sirens
The Leavenworth County Office of Emergency Management will be conducting a test of the outdoor warning sirens at 11 a.m. next Wednesday.

The test will consist of a steady tone sounded on the siren, alert warning, then silence, followed by a wavering tone, attack warning. The cable television override system also will be tested. All warning devices for schools and institutions also will be activated during the morning.

If anyone observes a siren failing to work properly, please contact the Leavenworth County Office of Emergency Management at 684-0455, or your local law enforcement agency.

In case of inclement weather, the test will be postponed until the next clear day.

City administrator to speak to chamber
Tonganoxies new city administrator, Chris Clark, will be guest speaker at the Sept. 7 chamber meeting.

The gathering will start at noon in the lower level of Mutual Savings Association, Fourth and Green streets. Lunch will be available for $4. Call the chamber to make a reservation, 845-9244.

Driving class offered for 50 and older
Drivers 50 years of age and older can refine their driving skills and learn safe, defensive driving techniques in an eight-hour refresher course offered at St. John Hospital. Saint John has joined with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to offer this 55 Alive/Mature Driving course.

The course will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 and 12 in the St. John classrooms. An hour has been allotted on both of these days for lunch at the participants expense.

Arts and crafts fest set for Sept. 10
The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Departments 21st annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival will be Sept. 10 in South Park, 1141 Mass.

The festival features handmade crafts and original artwork, as well as childrens activities, music and food.

Basehor library plans book discussion
The Basehor Community Library will present a four-part book discussion series this fall on Childhood Classics. Members of the community are invited to attend the free programs at the library, 2812 N. 155th St., Basehor.

The series is sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council, a nonprofit cultural organization, as part of its Talk About Literature in Kansas program. The councils resource center furnishes books and discussion leaders.

The first meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 12. Sandra Calvin Hastings, of Johnson County Community Collete will lead a discussion of Kenneth Grahames The Wind in the Willows. Those interested in participating in the discussion may stop at the library to check out the books. In this series, readers will also discuss Charlottes Web by E.B. White on Sept. 26, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor on Oct. 17, and The Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett on Nov. 7.

Mason lodge brings circus to Lawrence
The Masons of Lawrence Lodge No. 6 is sponsoring the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus on Saturday at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Shows will be at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Perry Lake plans weekend open house
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Perry Lake will hold an open house for the public Friday and Saturday to outline preliminary plans for modernizing three park areas at the lake. The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days at the Information Center at the east end of the dam.

Frank Funk, operations manager at the lake, said most of the facilities at Perry Lake are more than 30 years old and were designed to meet the needs of the recreating public at that time. Visitor needs have changed significantly.

Interested individuals, groups and agencies are invited to review the plans at the lakes Information Center and to provide comments and suggestions. No presentation will be made, but Corps representatives will answer questions.

Comments may be submitted in writing at the open house or mailed within 30 days to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, Attn: OD-TR, 601 E. 12th Street, Kansas City, Mo., 64106-2896.

Charity barbecue included in Riverfest
A Charity Barbecue and Cook-Off will be held in conjunction with Riverfest on Sept. 8 and 9 in downtown Leavenworth.
