Recreation Commission changes date of meeting
The Tonganoxie Recreation Commission has changed the date and location of this month`s meeting

Instead of Thursday at the Tonganoxie City Council Chambers, the meeting will be today at the Tonganoxie Public Library.

The starting time remains 7:30 p.m.

OU`s most valuable player has Tonganoxie ties
University of Oklahoma football player Trent Smith, nephew of Glen Smith, was named Most Valuable Player of the team`s win over Kansas State in the Big 12 Conference championship game Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium. Glen Smith is the owner and operator of Glen`s Opry, 707 E. Fourth.

Trent`s brother Tyler played for the Oklahoma High School state championship last weekend.

Eighth-grade roundballers stretch winning streak

Tonganoxie`s eighth-grade girls basketball team continued its dominance last week, winning its two games by sizable margins and pushing its record to 8-2.

In its Nov. 28 matchup with Lansing, the Warriors used their quickness and a tough full-court press to force 24 steals, which the team translated into several easy layups and a lopsided 31-19 victory.

"Lansing had only lost to one other team," said Coach John Korb. "I was real pleased with how the team played."

Hannah Heintzelman led the team with 13 points. Addie Heim added eight points and nine boards.

Laura Jeannin piloted the team, dishing out four passes for assists. Courtney Schwegler didn`t get on the board but she grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots.

Two days later the team put on a similar show against Piper, grabbing 28 steals and beating the team 22-6.

Korb credited his team`s free-throw shooting for much of its success in the physical game.

Heim and Heintzelman led the team with nine points each.
