Tonganoxie track star heads to Emporia State

Former Tonganoxie High School sports standout Jackie Wilson recently signed a national letter of intent to be a member of next year’s Emporia State University track team.

In early November, Wilson, who was also a four-year starter for the Chieftain basketball team, went to Johnson County Community College on a basketball scholarship following her 1998 graduation.

But Wilson, who threw the shotput and discus for Tonganoxie’s track team, couldn’t stay away from the sport for long.

After playing basketball during her first year at college, she switched sports and began throwing the hammer for the track team instead.

That was a move that paid off for Wilson.

Last year she finished eight at nationals, which attracted colleges who offered her scholarships, including Emporia State.

“A couple months ago, some coaches came down to Johnson County and talked to her,” said mother Betty Wilson.

Junior High teacher named coach of year

At a post-season meeting of the 11 volleyball coaches in Benedictine College’s league, Tonganoxie Junior High School teacher Chris Herron was presented the coach of the year award.

Although the award is for coaches, Herron said much of the credit goes to his team, which he guided to the best record in school history.

The team finished the season 30-8, won its conference and got farther in the post-season than any Benedictine team ever has.

The Herron-guided team won two games at the regional level before losing to Colombia College, which was this year’s national runner-up and the national champion the two year’s before that.

“How well the team played this year is most of it,” he said. “So, I really don’t know how to feel about it I’m more excited about how we did at regionals.”

Seventh-grade B-team finishes year with win

Tonganoxie’s seventh-grade girls basketball B-team wrapped up its season last week, splitting its two games.

In it’s first game of the week, the team matched up with Eudora on Dec. 5.

Though the game was a close battle early on, with the score tied 4-4 after the first quarter, Eudora was able to pull away from the Warriors, beating them 23-14.

Tonganoxie coach Phil Jeannin said the team played some of its best basketball of the season two days later.

In its final game of the season on Thursday, the team faced Lexington.

The Warriors won that game, 13-6 behind a stifling defense that held Lexington scoreless for the entire first half.

The B-team finished its season with a 6-7 record.

A-team victorious in season finale

The A-team’s matchup against Eudora was much like the B-team’s, with both teams playing close early on. The score was 7-5 Eudora after the first quarter.

But unlike the B-team game, during which Eudora pulled away slowly, the A-team game feature a second-quarter explosion by Eudora.

In the second quarter, Tonganoxie was outscored 13-3. The Warriors were never able to recover, and lost the game 14-24.

The A-team’s Thursday meeting with Lexington was another mirror of the B-team game.

In both games, the Warriors’ defense held Lexington scoreless for the first two quarters.

But while the B-team didn’t get on the scoreboard much more than Lexington in its 13-6 victory, the A-team complemented its defensive performance with an excellent offensive performance.

Behind 11 points and four blocks from Maggie Gratny, the Warriors rolled to a 37-5 victory.

Coach Phill Jeannin said his team did a good job passing the ball in the game.

“I was so proud that we had 15 assists on our 18 field goals,” said coach Phil Jeannin. “That shows how well we are playing as a team.”

The victory pushed the A-Team’s record to 7-5 heading into this Thursday’s Monticello tournament.
