Girls’ momentum snaps after snow cancellations

By Keith Burner - | Dec 27, 2000

For Tonganoxie’s boys basketball team, the long break in practices because of snow cancellations was a blessing.

It allowed the injury-depleted team to rest, recover and get back up to full strength if a bit rusty.

But for the girls team, which had just seemed to find its groove with back-to-back wins, the break was just that a break in momentum.

After pulling its free-throw shooting percentage closer to coach Leslie Foster’s team goal of 75 percent two weeks ago against DeSoto, the lady Chieftains hit only two of nine on Dec. 19, losing to Basehor-Linwood, 45-37.

Foster said that much of that had to do with all the snow cancellations limiting the time the team had to practice.

She said that also showed up on the court.

“Our offense didn’t work too well last night,” Foster said last Wednesday.

But its defense did, and despite going 22 percent from the line for the night, the Chieftains kept the game tight most of the way.

Though Tonganoxie only scored 18 point in the first half, the team held the Bobcats to only 20.

The Chieftains were only down by six points at the beginning of the fourth, but the Bobcats’ defense got things going and put the clamps on the Chieftains, holding them to only six points in the final quarter.

The team is hanging on to a 2-2 record. Foster said the next obstacle for the team would be to recapture the chemistry and focus it had before the big snow break.

“We’re still trying to find something,” she said. “The girls played hard, we just couldn’t get the offense to work.”

Senior Kristin Korb led the Chieftains in scoring, with nine. Junior Andrea Korb had five, and juniors Keri Walker and Aimee Eisman had eight apiece.
