Girls split games again; record is 9-7

By Matt Friedrichs - | Feb 16, 2000

An unlikely cast finished the game for the Tonganoxie girls basketball team Friday.

Andrea Korb was on the bench for the second consecutive game with a strained foot. Jill Stauch had fouled out, garnering five of the 50 fouls called during the game.

John Lee, Tonganoxie girls basketball coach, had been forced to reach deep down the bench, playing two inexperienced guards and three forwards instead of his usual three- or four-guard lineup.

“I thought the girls who came off the bench didn’t do too bad,” Lee said.

Kristin Korb, who didn’t play many varsity minutes in January, came up big for the Chieftains, hitting four of six free throws in the fourth quarter and helping to protect a tenuous lead that turned into a 61-50 win against Lansing.

“She keeps her head into the game,” Lee said, complimenting Kristin Korb’s contribution.

The game seemed to drag as a result of the many fouls called. Lansing, in fact, scored all but three second-quarter points from the foul stripe.

Lansing shot 32 free throws and made 22.

In the second and third quarters, Lansing scored 17 of 26 points from the free throw line.

Tonganoxie hit only 15 of 33 free throws.

“We need to get better at free throws too,” Lee said.

Still, it was a win for the Chieftains.

“I thought we didn’t play too bad on defense,” Lee said.

That was in stark contrast to a 48-31 loss to Piper earlier in the week.

“The Piper game I think that’s the lowest of all the games we’ve had all year,” Lee said.

Tonganoxie made only 17 percent of its shots from the floor and was outrebounded 45-29.

“We looked sluggish,” Lee said.

Still, the good news is that that loss came with time to repair the damage before substate play begins in two weeks.

The Chieftains played at Santa Fe Trail Tuesday.
