Design guides due in three weeks

By Amy Train - | Feb 23, 2000

Now that design guideline workshops for downtown Tonganoxie are complete, a Kansas City, Mo., firm is working on a draft of guidelines.

Historic Preservation Services has until March 15 to develop the first draft of guidelines that would apply to people seeking low-interest loans to rehabilitate their buildings. A public meeting likely will be conducted on March 21 to review the guidelines that the firm is developing.

Elizabeth Rosin, a Historic Preservation Services representative, said the consensus among people attending the most recent session was that members would like to protect the original material on buildings. Participants said they do not like metal siding on buildings, according to Rosin.

The $120,000 revolving loan fund will allow owners in Tonganoxie’s central business district to borrow money at a low interest rate for improvements on building exteriors. Design consultation will be provided.

“I thought people have generally been positive, but some have expressed some caution or concern that the guidelines will be mandatory for everybody,” Rosin said.

Only people who borrow from the fund will be required to follow the guidelines.
