Boys earn second win at Lansing
The Chieftains, 2-5 overall, 1-3 in Kaw Valley League play, surprised even themselves in a 66-49 win Friday.
Bryan Gurss with six points and Scott Breuer with four points helped the team jump to an early 12-1 lead. Neil Rieger scored the other basket off a pass from Breuer.
Mike Webb, Tonganoxie coach, said the team controlled the boards and the tempo of the game.
"I was pleased with the defensive effort, and I was pleased with the intensity," Webb said in the locker room after the game.
Brett Becker, senior guard, didn't play. Webb said he was not allowed to play but did not elaborate why.
The rest of the team covered Becker's absence. Sophomores Greg Burnett, Scott Jewell and Thomas Gilner all three also play junior varsity stepped into the game and played.
"Our bench was into the game, and when they came into the game, they produced," Webb said.
Tonganoxie led 20-11 after the first quarter, 40-29 at halftime and 54-35 after the third quarter. The Chieftains led by as many as 21 points in the second half. The unfamiliar lead meant the team made some mistakes.
At times, the motion, ball-control offense, ended with turnovers when the Lions pressured the ball or trapped. But on other occasions, the team read it well. At least twice, Rodell split a double team, passing the ball to Gurss who hit short jump shots from inside the free throw line.
"We're not used to being in that position," Webb said.
Still, he was pleased with the team's effort and play and the win.
"We gave up a lot those first three and a half quarters," Webb said.
The win should give the team some confidence this week as it plays two important league games and prepares for the 41st annual Tonganoxie Invitational next week.
