Council OKs request to change street name
Because more than half of the residents living on Village Street Terrace have signed a petition requesting a change of name for the street, the name will soon be Village Terrace.
Mayor John Franiuk said he had heard from people who live there that Village Street Terrace has been confused with Village Street by emergency vehicles and United Parcel Service trucks. He said the best thing to do would be to change the street name, which could essentially mean the difference between life and death in some instances.
Janet Angell, council member, agreed that it would lessen confusion in the future.
Melvin Terbovich, who lives on the former Village Street Terrace, attended the meeting and was irate. He said he did not see any feasibility in changing the name of a street where he had lived for 10 years. But he was the only person not to sign the petition for the name change.
Council members said they wanted to do what the majority had requested.
Dean Oroke, Tonganoxie, gave the history of how the street was named. He suggested changing the name totally. However, that is not what was petitioned by the residents.
The concept for the name change was first brought before the council at the Nov. 22 meeting.
That's when Linnie Hermann, Tonganoxie, told the council that people consistently confused Village Street Terrace with Village Street. She suggested Village Street Terrace be changed to Village Terrace.
Council members unanimously approved the name change Monday night.
