Basehor student hopes to travel to Europe

By Staff | Jan 26, 2000

Assuming he can raise the funds he needs, Steven Lowman, 14, will represent his community, county and country in Spain, Italy and France this summer.

An eighth-grader at Basehor-Linwood Middle School, Lowman was recommended for the third consecutive year by a member of his school faculty or administration to serve as a People to People student ambassador.

“It’s a trip where we try to learn more about other countries,” Lowman said. “The program was started by Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 to promote world peace. He thought the easiest way to promote peace was through children.”

To help, the family is holding an appreciation drawing. Prizes will be a television, donated by the Basehor Gold PRIDE committee, and a VCR and Beanie Babies donated by Lowman’s family. He needs to raise $5,000.

Lowman is also selling candy. To date he has received several hundred dollars, part of which was used to obtain a passport, his mother said.

Long active in community projects, Lowman started the Youth PRIDE group in Basehor and is the only youth member of the Community Education Advisory Council. Lowman, a Scout since he was 8, also is working toward his Eagle Scout designation.

Lowman will be one of about 22 students from the Kansas City area on the trip. He will live with a French family for three days.
