Computer system to track students

July 26, 2000

A new computer management system for the school district will feature many uses for parents, teachers and administrators.

Last Wednesday, school board members approved buying a $26,000 system, called Power-school. The district has considered a system for several years.

"This is the first one that has met the criteria and can do the things that we want it to do," said Bob Hensley, computer coordinator. "We have looked at a lot of different programs over several years. This one does all things that we wanted and is less expensive."

The system will provide districtwide data and individual building data.

"It will help improve communications between teachers and parents," Hensley said.

The system can send progress reports to parents daily, weekly, semi-weekly or on a monthly basis. Parents will be able to access student progress using the telephone or the Internet and obtain information on grades, progress reports, assignment scores, attendance information and teacher comments.

For teachers, the system includes an electronic gradebook program and also provides teachers with immediate access to attendance and other information.

The goal is to have the system in place and be able to track attendance, Hensley said.

The board also:

Approved a request from Superintendent Richard Erickson to conduct a community survey. The survey includes questions about how well the district teaches various subject areas, how well the district disciplines students, and maintains its buildings and other facilities.

Accepted bids for resurfacing of Tonganoxie Elementary School's south playground and driveway. The school board accepted bids for the resurfacing at the meeting. The board went with Meadow Construction's bid, which was the lowest at $18,750.

"I hope to have the installation taken care of by Aug. 5," Erickson said.

Agreed to hire: Karen Parrett as a primary grade para-educator for first and second grade at the elementary school; Lynn Heskett as a bus driver; and Dusty Arnold as a flag corps sponsor.
