Tonganoxie ball clubs finish strong

Town teams take top three spots in tournament

July 26, 2000

Some 9- and 10-year-old Ton-ganoxie girls showed that they knew how to play ball last week when the three softball teams from Tonganoxie took the top three places at the championship tournament in Basehor.

From the beginning it looked as if Tonganoxie's Midwest Carpet was going to run away with the 9-10 age division championship.

It went undefeated in the opening rounds, winning three games on its way to the final game.

Two Tonganoxie teams were vying for the other spot in the final game.

Himpel Homes and Rising Sun Construction each had lost an earlier game, and both teams had to battle through the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament.

The evening of July 18, the two teams squared off to see who would win the loser's bracket and take on Midwest Carpets for the championship.

Himpel Homes won the game and, with high emotions, went on to shut out the undefeated Midwest Carpet squad 5-0.

"We couldn't get a hit," said Midwest Carpet coach Pat Albert. "Ashlee Lohman pitched an excellent game against us."

But that wasn't it.

The tournament was double elimination and Midwest Carpet had only lost once.

So the teams played again. And though it was close, Himpel Homes was hot and knocked off the giant for the second strait game, beating Midwest Carpet 3-2.

"Both team played well, we just couldn't come up with the score when we needed it," Albert said.

Tonganoxie also had two teams in the 13-14 age division baseball tournament in Bonner Springs.

After coming up from the loser's bracket, Tonganoxie Realty lost to Bonner Springs' Heartland Towing in the championship game.

The team compiled a 3-2 record on its way to earning the second-place finish.

Tonganoxie's Powerhouse Graphics also put on a strong show at the tournament, earning a 2-2 record.

For the second year in a row the 13-14 age division softball tournament in Lansing was cancelled due to lack of entries.

Tonganoxie was represented in the division by Hancock Realtors and B&J Applemarket.
