Annual festival set for June

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Mar 1, 2000

Plans already are under way for Tonganoxie Days 2000.

The 15th annual event is scheduled for June 9 and 10.

The festivities kick off on June 9 a Friday with the Leavenworth County State Barbecue Championship at the Leavenworth County Fair-grounds. Judging for the contest is at noon on June 10.

The Friends of the Library’s 10-kilometer run/5-kilometer walk begins at 8 a.m. June 10. Arts and crafts booths will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. downtown, and musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day. Food, games for children and a pet parade also are planned at the festival, which attracts several thousand people to Tonganoxie.

Between 55 and 60 exhibitors usually make reservations for Tonganoxie Days, according to Connie Torneden, chairman of the festival.

“I feel like I’ve made a lot of friends because they come back year after year,” she said.

The Country Cruisers Car Show will be held June 10 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Park, along with the ABATE Motorcycle Show.

Leavenworth County sheriff’s officers will set up an I-Dent-A-Kid booth. Rides again will be offered through the downtown area on a miniature train.

“It’s lots of fun,” said Torneden. “It’s not just for little kids.”

A dance from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Shoemaker’s Auction Barn will cap off the two-day event.
