Debaters look to jewelry to help raise trip funds

Tonganoxie High School students have found a new way to raise money selling jewelry.

After a week of direct sales, the students are now marketing their wares through a different medium the Internet.

Debate coach Steve Harrell said his debaters are trying to raise about $6,000 to attend the national tournament Memorial Day weekend in Rochester, New York.

Terri Tucker, Lawrence, the director of fund raising for Institutional Financing Services which brought the jewelry sales plan to the debate team, said the team will continue to receive money for each piece of jewelry sold under its team identification number, E56456, on the Web site address: www.elemonadestand.com.

“Whatever is bought on this Web site will automatically go back to benefit the debate team,” Tucker said. “It’s a Web shopping mall that includes J.C. Penney, Borders and the Disney store, just to name a few.”

Items purchased using the debate team’s identification number on the Web site will result in 20 percent of the cost of each item being received by the team, Tucker said.

The jewelry is fairly inexpensive, Tucker said, and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Harrell said that because of the distance to the national competition, team members will fly to Rochester. Even though the school helps with some expenses, Harrell said team members are working to do their part.

“We try to cover as much of the cost as we possibly can,” Harrell said.
