Congratulations to THS graduates

By Staff | May 24, 2000

At the Tonganoxie High School graduation Saturday night, several of this community’s bright young stars talked about the past 13 years. The valedictorians all seven of them addressed their family, friends and classmates who had gathered at the Tonganoxie Athletic Complex for 2000 graduation.

Generally, the seven students thanked the many people who helped them along the way: parents, siblings, teachers and friends.

Allowing the THS valedictorians to give speeches at graduation underscores the importance of academics. In addition, it provides an opportunity for each of these young adults to take stock of where they have been and where they plan to go. The chance for self-examination and the chance for reflection are, as the commercial says, priceless.

As the sun set behind the crowd gathered at Beatty Field, the bright young people talked about their lives, beginning with kindergarten and concluding with anecdotes from their senior years.

Class member Brett Becker cautioned his classmates to craft their lives carefully. “We build our lives a day at a time,” he said. “Life is a do-it-yourself project. Build wisely.”

How true.

And now, as members of the Class of 2000 get on with the rest of their lives, we wish them well. We hope that if they’re planning to live their lives elsewhere that they’ll come back to visit us. We hope that if they’re planning to live their lives in our area that they’ll become leaders in our community.

And above all, we hope that they build their lives wisely, using the many tools they’ve acquired during the past 18 years.

Congratulations and best wishes to all members of the Tonganoxie High School Class of 2000.
