Salvation Army takes applications for help

The Salvation Army of Leavenworth will take applications for Christmas assistance next week.

Applications will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 6 through Nov. 10. In addition, they will be accepted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 9.

To apply, you must provide a photo identification, proof of income, Social Security numbers for all family members and proof of residency.

For families with children, it would be helpful to provide information on what children would like for presents under $25, as well as clothing and shoe sizes.

Sign language class offered at the Y

Beginning sign language class taught by Darla Woods will be offered through the Women's Community Y of Leavenworth starting next Tuesday.

The class will meet from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and run for four weeks at Warren Middle School.

For information or to enroll, call the Women's Community Y at (913) 682-6404. Fees must be paid in advance at the Y office, 520 S. Broadway, Leavenworth, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Art show and sale set for this weekend

Operation Wildlife's art show and sale is scheduled for this weekend.

The event will run from 7 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Radisson Hotel, 87th and Interstate 35, Overland Park.

The 20 wildlife artists who will show their work will donate a portion of their sales to Operation Wildlife, which uses the funds for veterinary care, food and rehabilitation of area wildlife, with the goal of releasing them into the wild.

Also included in this weekend's event is an exhibit on birds of prey.

Operation Wildlife is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing professional rehabilitation services for injured and orphaned wild animals.

Linwood group sponsors dinner

The Linwood United Methodist Women's group will be cooking Saturday.

The group's annual turkey and ham dinner will be served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, 324 E. Second St., Linwood.

Rec Commission offering Royal trip

The Tonganoxie Recreation Commission is sponsoring a trip to the American Royal on Saturday.

Tickets include the rodeo and Sawyer Brown's country-western concert. About 10 tickets remain. A school bus will leave the high school parking lot at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. To purchase tickets or for information, call the commission, 845-3502.
