Services for Warren G. Whitaker, 77, Tongan-oxie, were Nov. 1, 2000, at Ward Funeral Home, Washington, Kan., followed by military graveside services at Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Whitaker died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at his home.

He was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Tonganoxie, the son of G. D. and Alta (Croft) Whitaker.

He graduated from Tonganoxie High School. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. He returned in 1993 to Tonganoxie from Washington. Mr. Whitaker served in the 347th Infantry 87th Division of the U.S. Army in World War II before attending college. He was the Washington and Clay County supervisor for the Farmer’s Home Administration for 27 years before retiring in 1983.

He had been a member of the Washington Rotary Club, Frontier Masonic Lodge No. 104, American Legion and the USD 222 school board.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Washington, and joined the Congregational Church upon moving back to Tonganoxie.

He married Mary Katherine Ellis on April 9, 1948, in Ottawa. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Diane Ebbert, Tonganoxie; a son, Greg Whitaker, Tonganoxie; a sister, Sophie Maxfield, Michigan City, Ind.; a brother, Edwin Whitaker, Mount Dora, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
