Maple Grove Cemetery buys 10 adjoining acres

By Lisa Stevens John - | Nov 22, 2000

The board of the Maple Grove Cemetery last week purchased an additional 10 acres.

Harold Denholm, cemetery board president, said the land, which was purchased from Warren Sorensen, is in two tracts. Five acres are between the cemetery and U.S. Highway 24-40, with 300 feet of highway frontage. The other five-acre tract is on the north side of the cemetery, which is south of Tonganoxie.

The land fronting the highway will not be developed, said Larry Meadows, a board member. The five acres on the north side will be platted for burial plots and is expected to have a capacity for about 2,000 graves.

The original size of the cemetery was between six or seven acres, Denholm said.

He said work is planned for the area near the highway.

“We hope to get the front end cleaned up and to be able to have an avenue of flags set up by Memorial Day,” Denholm said.

He added that Meadows Construction soon would pave the cemetery roads with asphalt.

Denholm said the land purchase was made possible because of funds donated to the cemetery board.

“This is a result of what Pearl Geib left in her will for improvement of the cemetery,” Denholm said. “And we think this is quite an improvement.”

Denholm said the cemetery received about $240,000 approximately 10 years ago from Geib, and said the funds are invested in certificates of deposit and have since grown to more than $400,000.
