Basehor library hosts book sale this week
The Basehor Community Library's Fall Book Sale gets under way this week.

The sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will be held at the library, 2812 N. 155th St., Basehor.

On Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., members can participate in a presale. Memberships will be available at the door.

The sale also will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, when bags of books will be sold for $1.

Deadline nearing for gardening course
K-State Research and Extension again will sponsor a master gardener course this winter.

Classes begin in January, but registration must be completed by Oct. 30.

The course consists of 40 hours of instruction, and participants are required to repay those hours by sharing their knowledge with the community by performing 40 hours of community service.

The course costs $100, but half of that amount will be refunded upon a student's completion of the community service hours.

Subjects taught include basic botany, lawn care, entomology, plant pathology, vegetable gardening, houseplants, flower gardening, soils, organic gardening, tree care, landscape design and composting.

The course begins in January and is taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on eight consecutive Wednesdays at the 4-H Building in Lansing.

Immunizations available Monday
The Leavenworth County Health Department will begin offering the pediatric pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on Monday.

The vaccine is given to children under the age of 2 with one dose each at two, four, six and 12-15 months of age. Children must qualify under VFC program guidelines.

The vaccine will be administered from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the Leavenworth County Health Department, 620 Olive St., Leavenworth.
