Soccer team defeats Piper, ties DeSoto
Tonganoxies high school soccer team went undefeated last week, with a 2-2 tie against DeSoto on Tuesday and a 1-0 win over Piper on Thursday.
Coach Harold Pittman said that much of the credit for the weeks success goes to the teams defense, which has been stingy all year.
Our defense played well, he said. Its been our mainstay for most of the season.
In its game against DeSoto, the Chieftains scored by using smooth passing to get good shots on goal.
We moved the ball really well in that game, Pittman said. I actually though wed finish more than we did.
Tonganoxies first goal in that game came near the midpoint of the first period, when senior Ryan Lowe fed the ball to fellow senior Scott Breuer, who punched it in.
The teams second goal came off an assist from senior Mark Gepner to senior Rodney Lobb, who scored at 12:42 in the second period.
Pittman said his teams best goal of the week came in Thursdays 1-0 victory over Piper. Bringing the ball up the right sideline, the Chieftains moved the ball to senior Chris Ruff in the center of the field.
Ruff drove in for the score, but at the last second, he back-kicked the ball to Breuer, who tapped it in at the corner.
It was one of those goals that comes from knowing where your teammate is going to be and putting the ball there, Pittman said.
Shots on goal in the game were about even, but Piper wasnt able to slip past Tonganoxies defense.
The win brought the Chieftains record to 7-6-1. The team played Mill Valley on Tuesday and will play 6 p.m. Thursday at Immaculata. This week is the Chieftains last chance to prepare for regional action, which begins Monday.
