Woman to face trial for break-in attempt

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Sep 13, 2000

A Kansas City, Kan., woman has been ordered to stand trial in connection with an attempted break-in at a home northwest of Basehor.

Sheila Hicks, 37, faces charges of criminal damage to property and attempted residential burglary. A second man charged in the case, Daryl Thomas, 31, also of Kansas City, Kan., remains at-large.

“We think we’ve located him,” said Roger Marrs, deputy Leavenworth County attorney.

Hicks and Thomas, as well as two other Kansas City, Kan., residents were arrested after the attempted break-in on July 3. Their arrest in Basehor followed a high-speed chase between Tonganoxie and Basehor.

However, they were released before charges were filed in court because Leavenworth County sheriff’s officers didn’t provide the necessary paperwork in time to file charges against any of the suspects.

To hold a person in jail longer than 48 hours without charges, the law requires that a judge approve a probable cause affidavit either in writing or verbally. Up to that point, a person can be detained for investigative purposes.
