Volleyball team gets first win of season
After spending the first part of the season finding team cohesion, the Tonganoxie High School volleyball team came home with its first win of the year last week by beating DeSoto 2-0 on Sept. 12.
DeSoto forced the match to three games, but in the end the Chieftains were just too powerful, winning with games of 15-2 and 15-9.
In the team's match against Paola, the girls came out strong, but they had problems returning Paola's serves and lost the match after games of 15-2 and 15-5.
We probably should have beaten them," said head coach Kelly Alexander. "I know it and the girls know it."
But though the team had some problems with service returns, Alexander said the team made strides last week toward other goals.
She said the offense was smoother and committed fewer errors than in previous weeks. She added that her team had shown aggressive serving in its matches.
Defensively, Alexander said that, besides the problems with returns, her team did a good job stifling both teams.
"We blocked real well, shutting down their hitters," she said. "We just got killed on serve return against Paola."
Also on Sept. 12, the junior varsity team played Mill Valley, the other DeSoto team.
It was a battle, but the Chieftains finally took Mill Valley after three games.
Winning the first game 16-14, the Chieftains were unable to stop Mill Valley from answering with a 16-14 win of its own.
In the third game there were several match point serves, but Tonganoxie eventually prevailed, taking the last game19-17.
This week, the varsity and junior varsity teams played Perry and Piper Tuesday and the varsity will play host to the Tonganoxie Tournament on Saturday.
The tournament begins at 8 a.m., and the Chieftains will face Basehor-Linwood, Piper and Perry at the tournament.
