Reading Recovery receives scholarship

By Lisa Stevens John - | Sep 27, 2000

Tonganoxie’s new Reading Recovery program last week received a $10,000 scholarship to help fund training for the district’s Reading Recovery teacher, Deniece Wakeman.

Tammie George, assistant principal at Tonganoxie Elementary School, said the news that the school had received the gift was “just too cool.”

“We knew that Reading Recovery was going to be an expensive program,” George said. “And we applied for several different grants. We knew that this was the only scholarship that could be available and there were only 10 given in the United States.”

The scholarship is made possible through a grant from Ronald McDonald House Charities to the Reading Recovery Council of North America.

Reading Recovery is a short-term, one-on-one reading intervention program for low-achieving first-grade readers.

Wakeman, who has taught in Tonganoxie Elementary School, was selected as the local Reading Recovery teacher because she fulfilled the requirements of more than five years of teaching in primary grades, she has a master’s degree, and has shown success with young students in reading.

When Wakeman is certified as a Reading Recovery teacher, the Tonganoxie school district will become a training site for future Reading Recovery teachers in northeast Kansas.

Reading Recovery won’t be officially implemented at Tonganoxie Elementary School until next year.

“This is just considered to be her training year,” George said. “She is meeting with four students as part of her training, but the true implementation of the program will start next year.”
