Memorial services for Richard L. Benedict Jr., 56, Topeka, were Saturday, March 31, 2001, at All Faiths Chapel at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Topeka. Inurnment is planned at Greenwood Cemetery in Wichita.

Mr. Benedict died March 27, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Center in Topeka. He was born Feb. 13, 1945, near Daytona, Fla., the son of Richard L. and Florence Marie (Sholtz) Benedict.

He had lived for the past year in Topeka. He attended high school in Salina and Tonganoxie. He served in the Navy from 1964 to 1976, aboard river gunships in Vietnam and on submarines. He was a diesel mechanic in the Navy.

He lived in California after his discharge from the navy. He had lived in Wichita before moving to Topeka.

Mr. Benedict received an associate degree from St. Mary's College, Leavenworth.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann and Lori; a brother, Fred Benedict, Tonganoxie; two sisters, Donna Cummins, Del Rio, Texas, and Brenda Gingerich, Wellington; and two grandchildren. A son, Richard Benedict III died in the early 1970s at age 2.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Disabled American Veterans, sent in care of Davidson Funeral Home, 1035 N. Kansas, Topeka, 66608.
