Street maintenance gets city approval

Several Tonganoxie streets will be repaired during the next few months.

Monday night, city council members approved a street-repair plan that will cost up to $120,000.

On the list of repairs and cost estimates:

East Fourth Street, between the fire department and the bridge, $24,210.

East Fourth Street, from the bridge to the water plant, $31,190.

East Fourth Street, from Shawnee to U.S. Highway 24-40, $13,580.

Village Terrace, from First Street to 24-40 highway, $22,162.

11th Street Terrace, from 24-40 highway to the end, $8,500.

Green Street, from Eighth Street to dead end, $3,900.

Seventh Street Terrace, from Green Street to end, $4,875.

Seventh Street, from Shawnee to end, $1,400.

Cox Street, from the north edge of alley to Third Street, $5,950.

Cox Street, from Second Street to First Street, $4,265.

Rogers Road, from Washington Street to the end, $4,841.

In addition, council members approved water valve installations, at an estimated cost of $26,000.

Butch Rogers, city public works director, said that project should allow the city to repair water lines, without shutting down service to large areas of town.

“We can isolate a block or two at a time,” he said.

State OKs plan for traffic signal

In about a year, a traffic light could be installed along U.S. Highway 24-40 at Tonganoxie High School.

The city asked the Kansas Department of Transportation for a traffic signal, in an effort to ensure students at the high school and junior high can cross the highway safely.

The state will pay for design of the signal, and 90 percent of both the installation and inspection. The city’s costs will run about $15,000, according to City Administrator Chris Clark.

Plans call for the traffic signal to be installed at the entrance to the high school and at North Star Road.

In addition, the state agreed to reduce the speed limit on the highway at Tonganoxie’s east city limits from 65 mph to 55 mph.

Council accepts bid for sewer project

This summer, a sewer project will get under way in Tonganoxie.

Monday night, city council members approved a bid from Miles Excavating, Basehor, for $250,363 to perform the work. The bid was about $41,000 less than the engineer’s estimate for the work.

Council members urge involvement

The city of Tonganoxie is looking for some volunteers eager to learn more about the city.

The city has several vacancies on boards and commissions: two on the site plan review committee; one on the library board; two on the planning commission; and three on the tree board.

“I wish people would take interest in these board positions,” said Janet Angell, city council member. “They learn a lot about what goes on in their city.”

Anyone interested in serving on the panels is asked to contact city hall, 845-2620.

Property owner offers compromise

A Tonganoxie chiropractor pled his case to city council members Monday night.

The city, based on complaints from motorists, had asked J. Paul Snyder to remove trees in the city right of way near Snyder’s property at 307 Ridge St.

“I keep it mowed,” he said. “I keep the trash picked up. I spent the money to make Tonganoxie look better. I hate to see that come out of there.”

And he said he didn’t think the trees posed a problem. He did offer to remove two trees, however.

Council members agreed to Snyder’s offer.

“If taking out only one works, go for it,” said council member Kathy Graveman, who originally raised motorists’ complaints with other council members.
