Pops concert set at area winery
This year's pop concert at Heimhof Winery will include a celebration of the life of Frank Gilgin.
The CottonWood Winds, a woodwind quintet based in Lawrence, will play a "Pops at the Winery" concert May 12. The winery is northeast of Tonganoxie at 24242 Tonganoxie Road.
Gilgin, a Tonganoxie resident who died Feb. 3, wrote "Descarte's Dream," which the quintet has played before. Members decided to add the piece to its May 12 program as a tribute to Gilgin, according to Stuart Levine, who plays French horn with the group. Concert pianist Jack Winerock, who played in the premiere of "Descarte's Dream," will join the quintet for the performance. Other pieces on the program include "Concerto for Two Violines" by Antonio Vivaldi; "Le petite negre," by Claude Debussy; "Suite for Wind Instruments," by Charles Lefebvre; "Three Jazz Charts for Wind Quintet," by Jerry Randalls; "Polka from The Age of Gold," by Dimitri Schostakovich; and "Italian Polka," by Sergei Rachmaninoff."
"It's absolutely great music for a little outdoors thing," Levine said.
A wine tasting begins at 6:30 p.m., and a dinner catered by Bichelmeyer's Steakhouse of Tonganoxie begins at 7:30 p.m.
Reservations are required by May 1, Levine said. Tickets for the meal, music and wine sampling cost $13, and may be obtained by sending a check to the Chamber Winds, 1644 University Drive, Lawrence, 66044. For information, call Levine, (785) 842-0356. The rain date performance will be at 2 p.m. May 13 at Bichelmeyer's Steakhouse, Fourth and Bury, in Tonganoxie.
