Services for Elizabeth J. (Gast) Mercier, 72, Leavenworth, were Saturday, April 21, 2001, at St. Joseph Church, Leavenworth. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs. Mercier died Wednesday April 18, 2001, at Country Care in Easton. She was born March 7, 1929, in Leavenworth County, just south of Lansing, the daughter of Francis J. and Mary Kimmet Gast Sr.

She attended Hazeldell and Fairmount schools and high school with the Sisters of St. Francis at Maryville, Mo.

She worked in various hospitals in Missouri and Kansas and at Cushing Hospital in Leavenworth from 1946 to 1972.

She worked for the Veterans Hospital-Wadsworth for a time and was an active volunteer at Cushing Hospital. She also had worked for a hospital in Fremont, Neb.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Leavenworth and the Altar Society.

She married Thomas L. Mercier on May 27, 1972, in Leavenworth. He died April 10, 1988.

Survivors include her mother Mary Gast, Leavenworth; eight brothers, Francis Gast Sr. and Alfred Gast, both of Leavenworth, Stephen Gast Sr. of Easton, Bernard Gast, Burlington Junction, Mo., Herman Gast, Mission, Tex., Vincent Gast, Valley Falls, Harry Gast, Basehor, and Louis Gast, Linwood; six sisters, Christine Thompson and Clara Darrow, both of Leavenworth, Henrietta Bradley, Tonganoxie, Cecelia Wilmes, Maryville, Mo., Freda Meier, Lincoln, N.D., and Lucy White, Temple, Tex.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Easton Country Care or to Hospice of Leavenworth.
