Fire destroys area landmark

Sheriff’s officers are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed an abandoned two-story house about 1:15 a.m. last Thursday.

The house, at Leavenworth County Road 5 and Seymour Road, was a popular gathering place for young people, according to Rick Huhn, Delaware Township fire chief.

“The sheriff’s office runs kids out of there on a regular basis,” he said. “We talked with the owner, who said that every Halloween kids go there.”

Robert L. Seymour owned the home, which was more than 100 years old.

“It was a nice house back 100 years ago,” Huhn said. “It’s been abandoned for a number of years. It’s been pretty dilapidated, and was in pretty bad shape inside.”

A passerby noticed the flames, Huhn said. Firefighters arrived about 1:15 a.m., and had the fire under control about two hours later.

Huhn said it appears the fire was set either accidentally or on purpose.

“It’s under investigation,” Huhn said. “We’re not saying kids started it, but there’s no electricity to the place, no gas, and there was no lightning that night.”
