The Mirror wins state news honors
Staff members at The Mirror newspaper were recognized Saturday in the Kansas Press Association's annual Awards of Excellence contest.
The staff collected a total of 17 awards in the contest, which recognizes work of newspapers in Kansas.
The Mirror took three first-place honors: Spot News, Best Use of Photographs and Best Front Page; four second-place awards: Sports Column Writing (sportswriter Keith Burner), Feature Photography (news editor Lisa Scheller), Feature Package (Scheller) and General Excellence; two third-place honors: Editorial Writing (editor and publisher Caroline Trowbridge) and Personal Column Writing (Scheller); and eight honorable mentions: Editorial Writing (Trowbridge), News and Writing Excellence, News Photography, Newspaper Photo Spread, Editorial Pages, Special Section, Design and Layout Excellence and Best Newspaper Web Site.
The awards were presented during Kansas Press Association's annual convention in Lawrence.
During the business meeting of the convention, Trowbridge was elected to the KPA board of directors, as representative of weekly newspapers in Kansas.
The Kansas Press Associ-ation awards are the second honor this year for The Mirror staff. In March, the newspaper was named the "Nation's Best Non-Daily" newspaper by the Inland Press Foundation. The Mirror won in its circulation division of less than 5,000.
