Volleyball varsity posts win
Tonganoxie got a slight taste of a match-like situation in the Red/White volleyball scrimmage Friday.
Whether it will tide them over until the season opener will be known in the next two weeks.
Although the freshman squad will play in a quadrangular at Mill Valley on Thursday, the varsity and junior varsity don't start the season until next week. The junior varsity plays at Basehor next Wednesday; varsity plays at Bonner Springs Sept. 6.
Despite the layover, first-year coach Tiffany Parker said the time off will only make her team stronger.
"We're going to be that much better," Parker said. "That first match is going to be really exciting."
The time span fits into Parker's game plan pretty well. She has introduced some new concepts to the team in the last week, and the Chieftains are starting to adapt well.
The Chieftains had three scrimmages Friday freshmen vs. freshmen, freshmen vs. junior varsity and junior varsity vs. varsity.
Scores weren't kept in the one-game scrimmages until the final game. The varsity, or red team, won 15-7.
"I think the players performed well as a team," Parker said. "Some of the girls were nervous, so it was good to work some of those nerves out."
The Chieftains will open the varsity season against Bonner Springs, Atchison and Baldwin, but Parker isn't worried about the opponents.
"I'm more concerned with how we come out," Parker said. "Confidence is important. From there, winning takes care of itself."
The varsity's first home matches will be Sept. 22.
