Grapplers take second in Onaga Classic
Tonganoxie just missed taking 3A state-ranked Royal Valley last Thursday, but the Chieftains handled other 3A opponents Saturday by winning the Onaga Classic in Onaga.
Against Royal Valley in a match in Tonganoxie, the Chieftains started strong, taking three of the first four weight classes with pins.
Tonganoxie High School posted an 18-3 lead after Andy Koontz, Ross Starcher and Josh Ferris opened with pins. Royal Valley's Michael Tollefson defeated Chad Starcher 8-6 in overtime and scored the Panthers' first points.
Royal Valley, ranked No. 7 in the state, scored pins in the 189, 215 and 275 weight classes, finishing the meet with 18 straight points. The Panthers won, 45-36.
"We had it won," THS coach Bill DeWitt said. "You have to learn these lessons."
In Onaga, though, the Chieftains were victorious.
Tonganoxie took first with 143.5 points, while Rock Creek was second with 105.
Belleville and Oskaloosa tied for third with 96 points.

Thursday's home meet included many Chieftain fans.
DeWitt said seeing the high school parking lot full of vehicles on Thursday was encouraging.
