Grapplers surpass records of past four years, prepare for league

February 7, 2001

Tonganoxie's high school wrestling team completed its most successful season in four years last week, beating Mill Valley and tying Lansing on Thursday to move its final record to 8-3-1.

The team scored four top-four tournament finishes, and its 8-3-1 mark is the best record of Coach Bill DeWitt's four years at Tonganoxie.

At the end of DeWitt's first season as coach, in 1998, the team finished 4-8. Since then, the team has improved its record every year.

In 1999, the team finished 5-7. It finished 7-5 last year.

"It's just a real credit to the kids who've stuck with the program for four years," DeWitt said. "We've improved every year."

At DeSoto on Thursday, Tonganoxie beat Mill Valley 44-24 after winning eight of 14 matches, seven of those wins coming by pin.

In its duel with Lansing, The Chieftains also won six of 14 matches, but that wasn't enough to beat Lansing and the two teams finished tied at 37.

The Chieftains had five pins in that duel.

Several wrestlers went undefeated for the day. Josh Ferris, Steve Adcox, Mike Andrews and Andrew Miller finished 2-0.

Senior Willy Altman also went undefeated, winning his Mill Valley match before sitting out his Lansing match with illness.

"He really shouldn't have wrestled Mill Valley," DeWitt said. "To his credit, he's a senior and he wanted to wrestle. He's stuck with the program for four years. I wasn't about to tell him he couldn't wrestle."

DeWitt said that Altman, as well as all his wrestlers, should be healthy and ready for Saturday's Kaw Valley League tournament Saturday at Basehor-Linwood.

"I thought we wrestled both teams pretty well," DeWitt said following the double duel. "We wrestled two strong teams to end the season and now we've got all next week to get ready."

Following the DeSoto meet, the Chieftains had 10 days to prepare before Saturday's league meet, which begins at 10 a.m.

Junior Varsity Saturday at Effingham.

The junior varsity squad completed its season Saturday at Effingham, placing several wrestlers in the top four of their weight classes.

Leading the Chieftains were Chuck Riddle, who earned a 2-1 and second place at 160 pounds and Mitch McGuinnes, who finished 1-1 and also earned second place honors. McGuinnes wrestles at 189 pounds.

JV Coach Dean Moss said the season has seen several Chieftains improve drastically from the season's start.

"They just have come a long way." Moss said. "Some of the first-year wrestlers turned out to be pretty good wrestlers."
