Work of volunteers deserves recognition
For Tonganoxie's Assembly of God Church, which was leveled in the May 11 tornado, volunteerism has taken on a new, deeper meaning.
Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, men and women flocked to the church at Sixth and Church streets, offering their expertise and their time in an effort to rebuild the frame building. About 400 volunteer-hours later, most of the framing was completed.
As Waneta Karriker, wife of church pastor Herman Karriker said, "We're just really, really thankful. We were a little hard to contain at church on Sunday. We were all just beaming."
Parishioners, by the way, are meeting in space at the Tonganoxie Christian Church until the Assembly of God building project is completed later this year.
Because the Assembly of God congregation numbers between 30 and 40, they're depending heavily on volunteers. And when the call went out, many people answered.
Anyone who helped with the church project should be commended for pitching in and providing assistance.
