Diligence necessary on building-code issue
Tonganoxie City Council members Monday night sent a strong message Monday concerning landlords who don't respond to tenants' complaints about safety issues.
Sparked by complaints following a Feb. 14 fire at a local apartment complex, the council agreed to carefully monitor the work of a Lawrence management company. And council members said they want stronger city codes that would help them avoid future problems.
It's admirable that the council has taken such strong action.
It's only unfortunate that the situation at the apartment complex has reached the state it has, despite the management company's contention that it has responded to tenant complaints.
A former resident at the complex said the management company has taken advantage of people who have few choices in housing because the city offers little adequate, affordable dwellings. People are afraid to complain, she said, because they fear eviction.
The city is off to a good start, and council members and the city administrator should continue to bird-dog this issue.
