Junior high boys basketball teams have eventful week

January 31, 2001

Tonganoxie's eighth-grade boys' basketball A-team won one and lost two games during the past week and a half. Its record is now 2-3.

The first game was Jan.22 at Baldwin. Tonganoxie lost 48-29, turning the ball over 20 times.

"We let their half-court press take us out of our game," Coach Larry Percy said. "Their pressure caused us to revert to bad habits we have been trying to break."

Those habits were "dribbling into traps, big men not coming to the ball and passing, letting mistakes lead to other mistakes."

During the second and third quarters, Baldwin scored 17 and 16 points respectively, which was key in the win.

"Their quickness inside hurt us and they were much sharper than we were," Percy said.

Sam Mitchell scored 9 points to lead the Warriors. Michael Morris had seven.

The Warriors came back and won Jan. 23 against Oskaloosa, 46-20, at home.

Percy said his team played great in terms of defensive intensity and team play.

The Warriors led 23-9 at halftime.

Mitchell led scoring with 10. Chris Colon and Michael Morris scored 8 points apiece.

The Warriors lost 51-37 last Thursday against Lansing.

Travis Schultz and Mitchell each scored 8 points for Tonganoxie.

"We blocked out and rebounded much better," Percy said, "especially against a big, quick team."

The eighth graders play at Perry-Lecompton Thursday.

Tonganoxie's seventh-grade A-team boys' basketball team went 1-2 last week, pushing its record to 2-3 for the season.

In its first game of the week, a Jan. 22 matchup with Baldwin, Tonganoxie lost a defensive battle and the game 6-14.

"It could have gone either way," said Coach Mark Mall.

Things did go the Warriors' way on Tuesday, when they beat Oskaloosa 28-16.

Leading Tonganoxie in the win was Phil George, who scored nine.

But when the team met up with Lansing on Thursday, it was a whole other ballgame.

"Lansing is very, very good," Mall said. "We were really never in the game."

Lansing, which is undefeated this year and hasn't won a game by fewer than 10 points all season, beat the Warriors 68-17.

The team plays at 4 p.m. Thursday in Tonganoxie against Perry-Lecompton.
