Preparation under way for basketball tournament

July 3, 2001

Summer league basketball might not translate into success in the winter, but one Tonganoxie team came close to knocking off the summer leader.

Bonner Springs II, which was 10-0 going into Thursday nights game with Tonganoxie I, had to assemble a second-half rally in a 70-67 win at the TJHS gymnasium.

The Chieftain team, which finished the regular season 7-5, led 37-25 at the half. But the Bonner Springs team closed the gap to five at the 4:49 mark and took the lead with less than two minutes left in the game.

Tonganoxie coach Dave Walker said the local team was doing well.

"I'm pretty pleased with their effort," Walker said. "Not to make excuses, but we tried to divide our teams evenly.

"That was their best team. They really kept their composure down the stretch."

Tonganoxie I later lost to Basehor-Linwood, 68-57. Those two teams will play again in the league tournament at 6 p.m. today in the THS gymnasium. Top-seeded Bonner Springs II (12-0) will take on fourth-seeded Tonganoxie II (5-7) at the same time in the TJHS gym in the other half of the four-team bracket. Bonner Springs I (1-11) and Tonganoxie III (3-9) did not advance to the tournament.

The championship and consolation games will be played at 7 p.m. in the high school and junior high gyms respectively.

A bracket for the tournament appears on page 2B of today's edition of The Mirror.
