Basehor firm recovering from fire

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Jul 11, 2001

Recovery from a May 25 fire at the Cabinet Shop of Basehor is taking longer than co-owner Ken Lindsley would prefer.

The company’s building in downtown Basehor was destroyed by a fire that required the work of 90 firefighters to control. The cabinet shop was tucked between Basehor Community Library and a two-story older home, both of which were saved from the blaze.

Now, more than a month after the devastating fire, Lindsley still is waiting to settle issues with his insurance company.

“That’s still holding us up,” he said. “We’re still doing cabinets. We’re trying to stay up with our production. We’re still planning in the long-term to build and get over to Tonganoxie.”

Before the fire ripped through the shop, Lindsley had said he planned to move the company within a year to Tonganoxie’s Urban Hess Business Center. The company owns two lots in the business park, which is at the intersection of Laming Road and Leavenworth County Road 5.

Those plans still are viable, Lindsley said, although the timetable may have changed.

He estimated the fire caused more than $200,000 in damages to contents of the business and another $100,000 to the building.

The burned-out shell that had housed the company in downtown Basehor must be torn down. But, again, Lindsley is waiting on the insurance settlement.

“We’ve received a couple of estimates,” he said, adding that the work likely will be expensive because of the proximity of the library and house to the building.

For now, the company is working with a pared-down crew, using some machinery that was salvaged after the fire.

“We got a little bit of equipment out of the building and got it refurbished,” Lindsley said.
