Vet-Vax takes Midget League tournament

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jul 18, 2001

The untarnished met the scrappy in the Kaw Valley League Midget Boys Tournament final on Friday at Tonganoxie.

Vet-Vax, 12-0 going into the tournament, met the bottom seed, No. 6 First State Bank, winners of two in the regular season. One or two-run losses were also the norm for First State Bank, including two such games against Vet-Vax during the regular season.

For First State Bank, a sixth win in a long double elimination tournament wasn’t to be, and Vet-Vax capped off a perfect season (15-0) by defeating the improved team 10-1.

Vet-Vax started early with three home runs in the first inning, and continued to stretch its lead for the title.

First State Bank came off a strong game Thursday, upsetting No. 2 Knights of Columbus 4-3 after falling 5-3 to the same team in the winner’s bracket two nights before.

The undefeated Vet-Vax, meanwhile, outscored its opponents 22-3 in three games, limiting each foe to a single run.

Vet-Vax coach Travis Freeman said his team was focused.

“They were great,” Freeman said. “They played together as a team all season. “They were pumped up.”

First State Bank just came up one game short of a big tournament run.

Coach Bill Anderson said he used the regular season to experiment and then came through in the tournament.

“During the regular season, I let all the kids try different positions,” Anderson said. “I let them have fun. “In the tournament they came together and started playing well.”

In other tournaments, First State Bank defeated Leavenworth County Co-op in the Junior Boys title game.

In the K-Ball Tournament, Evans Real Estate defeated Preferred Foundations for their title.
