Leavenworth county officers earn honors for police work

Undersheriff Zoellner named police officer of the year

Major Dave Zoellner, Leavenworth County undersheriff, has been named police officer of the year.

In a ceremony last month, Zoellner, along with many other law enforcement officers in the county, were recognized for their work during the 15th annual Peace Officers and Police Awards and Memorial Day. The recognition was sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 55 and the George Edward White VFW Post No. 56, both in Leavenworth.

These men were named officers of the year for their departments: Sgt. Larry R. Phillips, Veterans Administration Police Department; Staff Sgt. James B. Stanley, Fort Leavenworth Military Police Department; and Sgt. William Slusher, Leavenworth Police Department.

These officers also were recognized:

By VFW Post 56: Leavenworth police Officer Sean Goecke, certificate of achievement in criminal investigation; Leavenworth police Officer Scott Bastian, merit award for excellent arrest; and sheriff's Sgt. John Schermbeck, certificate of achievement in criminal investigation.

By VFW Post 56 Auxiliary: Leavenworth police Officer James Bridges, merit award for excellent arrest; Leavenworth police Officer Nicholas Nordmann and sheriff's Deputy Edward Cummings, certificates of achievement in criminal investigation.

By Eagles Aerie 55: Lansing police Officer Richard Fairbanks, merit award for excellent arrest; Leavenworth police Officer Sean Goecke and sheriff's Sgt. Brian Holmes, certificates of achievement in criminal investigation.

By Retired Eagles Activities Committee: Lansing police Sgt. Anthony Waterman, merit award for excellent arrest; and Leavenworth police Officer Eugene Tomrell, lifesaving citation.

By Eagles Auxiliary Aerie 55: Lansing police Officer James Magee, merit award for excellent arrest; and Leavenworth police Cpl. James Brewer, lifesaving citation.
