Fire department hopes to raise funds

The Alexandria Fire Association is putting on an evening of family fun this Saturday.

The good times start at 5 p.m. at the fire station Springdale. Music from the 1940s to the 1990s will be provided by disc jockey Jim Winkler of Jarbalo.

Food, including hamburgers and hot dogs, will be available, and some members of Henry Leavenworth Car Club will display their automobiles.

Members of Alexandria Fire Department will demonstrate their new Jaws of Life by cutting up a vehicle.

Door prizes and dance prizes have been donated.

Admission to the event is by donation. Proceeds will be used to purchase fire equipment and gear for firefighters.

The fire station is at the intersection of Kansas Highway 92 and Leavenworth County Road 30 (235th Street).

Benefit scheduled for Tonganoxie man

A benefit Saturday night for a Tonganoxie man injured in an accident in April will include a taco dinner and auction.

Tony Maurer, a Pittsburg State University student, was paralyzed in an all-terrain vehicle accident on April 1. His family has medical insurance, but additional funds are needed to help purchase equipment and other health-related items not covered by insurance.

The event for Maurer will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the administration building at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

A taco dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A raffle will be drawn at 7:30 p.m., and a silent auction will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tickets will be available at the door. Meal tickets are available at the office of Dr. Richard Dean, 420 E. Fourth, or from Garner.

Sedgwick family reunion scheduled

The Sedgwick family will celebrate its 20th family reunion on June 24 at the Wyandotte County Lake Shelterhouse No. 6. Dinner will be served at 12:30 p.m., with the meal being catered. There will be two $150 scholarships available. Please bring recipes to include in a cookbook.

Carillon dedication set for Saturday

A carillon honoring veterans will be dedicated Saturday at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Leavenworth. Gary Sheerer, Kansas lieutenant governor, will speak at the event, which begins at 4 p.m.

Legislators to speak at GOP meeting

Two state lawmakers will discuss the 2001 session of the Kansas Legislature during Monday’s meeting of the Leavenworth County Republican Women’s Club.

State Sen. Bob Lyon, R-Winchester, and state Rep. Kenny Wilk, R-Lansing, will attend the meeting, which begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Ramada Inn in Leavenworth.
