Leavenworth County Sheriff

Cynthia Evans, 37, Lawrence, was driving west on U.S. Highway 24-40, about two miles east of Tonganoxie, when she hit a deer that ran onto the road about 12:30 a.m. Friday. No injuries were reported.

Kenneth Wilcox, 78, Baldwin, was driving south on Leavenworth County Road 1 when his vehicle was hit by Christopher Johnson, 15, Bonner Springs, who was driving east on Kansas Highway 32 about 12:44 p.m. Friday. Wilcox had failed to yield the right of way at the stop sign before crossing the intersection on Kansas Highway 32 and County Road 1. Wilcox and passenger Edna Schmidt, 93, Lawrence, were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Laura Hamilton, 15, Leavenworth, was driving east on Gilman Road around a curve, at 155th Street about 10:45 a.m. June 5. Hamilton lost control of her vehicle, slid into the ditch and hit a tree. Hamilton was taken to St. John Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

Leavenworth County District Court

A preliminary hearing has been set for 3 p.m. Monday in Leavenworth County District Court for a rural Tonganoxie couple, accused of running a marijuana growing operation at their home in the 18500 block of 246th Street. Jarrod Sommer, 28, and Jackie Sommer, 26, face identical charges: cultivation of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, not having a drug tax stamp, all felonies, and possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. The couple were arrested May 18 at their home, after sheriff's officers discovered an alleged marijuana-growing operation in the basement of a building on the couple's property.

Douglas County

District Court

A 41-year-old Topeka man has been ordered to stand trial in Douglas County District Court in connection with the March 16 shooting of Jason Smith, 18, Tonganoxie. Alfreddie Kelley is accused of shooting Smith in the leg following an altercation outside a downtown Lawrence nightclub. Kelley's jury trial is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 27. A status hearing will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 22.

Tonganoxie Police

Someone broke into East Side Auto Parts, 1204 Highway 24-40, last Thursday and stole $300 in cash. There are currently no suspects.

Someone knocked over a soda machine at B & J Amoco, 24-40 Highway and Ridge Street. The incident was discovered about 7 a.m. Sunday.

A Dumpster caught fire about 2:15 a.m. Sunday at Colonial Ridge Apartments, 500 block of East Second. The fire was contained with minimal damage. Some of the fence around the Dumpster also burned.
