Three wrestlers from the Tonganoxie Kids Wrestling Club qualified for a national tournament next month.
Tonganoxie senior Steven Adcox qualified in the 155-pound division, Lansing junior Troy Medill at 165, and Lansing junior Marcus Waters at 114.5.
"The kids are all really excited," said Scott Underwood, coach.
The national tournament will be held July 16 through July 28 in Fargo, N.D.
The boys are actually part of the Kansas National team, which placed in the top five last summer. Last year, the wrestling club only had one wrestler qualify for the national meet. The state tournament that this year's group qualified at was June 1 and June 2 in McPherson.
"It was a pretty tough tournament," Underwood said. "It's not easy to qualify for. We've only been practicing since April 9."
Six wrestlers qualified for the state tournament. The three who qualified for nationals also qualified for state last year.
And, of course, nationals will be even tougher.
"It's a really, really tough tournament," Underwood said. "I'd like to see the kids win one or two matches each. It's more of a factor that they get to go than placing."
Underwood said there are a few bugs to work out on certain moves. He also stressed that the wrestlers are going to have to get themselves in as good of shape as possible.
Going to the tournament is going to cost about $500 per person, Underwood said, adding that the wrestlers hope to find donations.
Because this is the second year that wrestlers from the club have qualified, Underwood plans to create a fund-raising program next year.
Underwood said he's proud of his wrestlers.
"It takes dedication to wrestle throughout the summer. I try to offer something for those who do want to do it, though," he said.
